This early-1900s Pelouze Family Scale was manufactured by the Pelouze Scale & Manufacturing Company of Chicago. It features a 24-pound capacity, square metal weighing platform, round paper dial, decorative scalloped base, and alternating red and black numerals.
The dial displays patent information through June 23, 1903, placing its manufacture sometime after that date. Patent dates indicate when the mechanism was protected rather than the exact year this individual scale was produced.
Despite its heavily weathered appearance, the mechanism is still responsive. It was tested using a known 5-pound weight, registered correctly during the basic test, and returned to zero once the weight was removed.
